How many lapsed members were taking e-publications?
As of 4/1/2009 of those lapsed at that time, there were 2211 people out of 13694 or 16%. Recouping those folks over the year, the number is now closer to 1256 out of 7946 ... still 16%.
Is there validity to the fabled assumption "Only 10% are active?"
The raw responses from the massive LGS&F survey which asked "Do you attend at least one Local Group activity a year?" show that 43.6% do go to at least one event a year.

I wouldn't consider going to one local group event a year to constitute being active in the local group. When it comes to attendance at local group events, I would say that "active" connotes regular and recurring attendance. It also connotes a lower level of activity, with volunteerism constituting a higher level of activity.
Clearly, more investigation is warranted.
I'm with Fred. Its great that 43.6% attended at least one event per year, but you need more activity than that to be considered active in my book too.
Ditto. I would think that a bare minimum of one event per month, on average, would be "active." However, someone who never attends any events but is a regular columnist in the LG newsletter is also active, in my book.
"Active" is such a nebulous term that it can mean anything anyone wants. And as most people probably won't set up a mutually agreed upon definition in advance, everyone gets to be right. (!)
